A Helping Hand

A Helping Hand

Six months have gone by with Meera, Esha, and Heena. As a house mother, Divya teaches all her Mukti daughters the importance of being a sister to any new child. Meera, Esha, and Heena have not met a newcomer near their age, until one day, Divya comes to the family room with a 5-year-old girl in her arms. “Who is she, Mother Divya? Is she your daughter?” the girls asked. “Yes, she is my Mukti daughter and your new sister, Preethi. She is feeling scared because Mukti is new for her. What do you suggest we can do to cheer her up?” Divya asked as she sat down with Preethi on her lap.

Meera pulled out a storybook to read to Preethi, and Esha brought in a toy for her to play with. Preethi looked at them with a small grin but stayed seated on Divya’s lap. Then Heena lifted her hand up to Preethi! “Heena, are you asking for Preethi to sit with you?” Divya asked. Heena nodded with a smile. Both girls are 5 years old, and Divya could see that they liked each other. Preethi slowly climbed off Divya’s lap and held Heena’s hand and started to talk! That was the first time Preethi spoke since she arrived at Mukti Mission! Divya was so proud of the girls for working together to help Preethi feel like a part of the family.

Divya’s motherly love for all her Mukti daughters, including Preethi, was strong. She remembers that same love was given to her by the nursery worker, Ms. Sunita, and then Ms. Rao. Divya has become a role model to the children. She always shares her life story to her students and her Mukti children whenever she can–at home and in the classroom.
