“School’s the worst!”

“You always say that, Sami,” laughed Flat Sujata. “What would make it better?”

“If there wasn’t any,” declared her best friend.

“Then you can go live in a cardboard box. You need school to do well in life.”

“I thought that was what Jesus was for,” declared Sami stubbornly.

“Well, He does help us but He also expects us to be sensible and use the tools He gives us. School is one of those tools.”

“It’s still the worst,” grumped Sami.

“Do you remember the summer holiday?” Flat Sujata asked trying to change the subject.

“Of course I do,” Sami declared. “There was no school.” Flat Sujata rolled her dark brown eyes.

“Do you remember all of the kids who came to the Mission?”

“Sure, they were from the village.”

“That’s right. There were so many of them,” mused Flat Sujata.

“I didn’t like that week,” Sami grumped again.

“What?” declared Flat Sujata in disbelief. “That was the best. I love VBS.”

“It should just be called VB.”

“Why Sami?”

“Because the ‘S’ stands for….”

“I know,” interrupted Flat Sujata. “School. Get over it, Sami.” Her friend just glowered at Flat Sujata. But just a hint of a smile creased the corners of her mouth.

“I did like all the teachers who helped out,” admitted Sami.

“Teachers? You like them?” needled Flat Sujata. “They’re from the SCHOOL.”

“And all the other volunteers were nice,” Sami moved on quickly. “And the music team was the best.”

“Yes, they were,” agreed Flat Sujata.

“I especially liked the snacks.”

“If the school had snacks, would you like it better?”

“Of course,” responded Sami quickly. Flat Sujata just nodded her head and giggled.

“What about the Bible stories? Did you like those too?”

“They were interesting,” Sami nodded. “I like the way there were all the themes for each day.”

“That’s right. I had forgotten that,” admitted Flat Sujata. “Wasn’t one of them about something like choosing joy?”

“That was the first day,” Sami pointed out. “Then there was being teachable…”

“THat sounds like school,” Flat Sujata mentioned slyly.

“Oh, be quiet,” laughed Sami. “I guess they wanted each of us to follow Jesus closely.”
“So how’s that going?” asked Flat Sujata. Sami looked contemplatively at the sky and then looked at her friend.

“Some days I do good. Others not so much,” she admitted.

“Me too,” Flat Sujata revealed.

“So, how do we do better?”

“Well, Sami,” responded her best friend, “I suppose we need to do what they suggested.”

“I forget what that was.”

“We need to read the Bible to know what Jesus wants us to do when we face different situations. And we need to obey what we read.”

“Oh, is that all.”

“I think we’re also supposed to worship God for being so great and wonderful.”

“He did forgive my sins,” Sami noted seriously. “It seems so hard to live for Jesus.”

“I think it is only hard when we try to do it without Him helping us.”

“I need to go back and read those verses from VBS,” Sami stated.

“Maybe we could do that together,” Flat Sujata remarked. “I know I could sure use more growth in my life.” The two friends looked at each other and smiled. “Plus, it would remind us of other important tings.”

“Like what?” inquired Sami.

“Like going to school!” Flat Sujata laughed.
